Hyatt was founded in 1957 by Jay Pritzker when he purchased the Hyatt House hotel located near Los Angeles International Airport. Over the following ten years, Jay Pritzker and his brother Donald Pritzker, who were also working together on other Pritzker family business ventures, developed the company into a North American hotel and management corporation that became publicly traded in 1962.
Hyatt International was established in 1968 and later became a separate publicly traded company. The Pritzker family business interests took Hyatt Corporation and Hyatt International Corporation private in 1979 and 1982, respectively.
On December 31, 2004, nearly all of the hospitality assets owned by the Pritzker family business interests — including Hyatt Corporation and Hyatt International Corporation — were consolidated into a single entity, now known as Hyatt Hotels Corporation.
